The RSS Roof story

“One wrong move and you fall eight meters down. The chance of surviving that is small, ”says Eddy Droste, owner of RSS Roof bv. It is therefore logical that the Labor Inspectorate sets strict requirements for the working conditions of roofers. Fall protection must be installed from a height of 2.5 meters. In practice, this almost always means that scaffolding is erected in front of the building. “Expensive and cumbersome,” says Droste. “It takes a lot of time to erect scaffolding. Especially when it comes to the back of houses, where people have put all kinds of sheds themselves. The scaffolding must then be built around it. ”

Droste has owned RSS Roof since 2019. The company was founded in 2001 by Jan Bakker, formerly a roofer by trade. Bakker invented an aluminum fall protection that ‘clicks’ onto the roof edge. “Our system was set up in two hours in ten different households. A scaffolding takes two or three days. This system is also much lighter. ” Droste calculates the price advantage. “We recently delivered our systems to a contractor who had to lay roof tiles for 350 homes. If they had to build scaffolding, it would cost at least 400,000 euros. With the roof protection system from RSS Roof, the costs are less than a quarter ”.

The simple and stylish design is suitable for all roof classes and has also won several innovation prizes.

The engineer speaks

It all started with a stainless steel prototype at the beginning of this century. “Together with Jan Bakker, we modified the 1st design,” says Koot Engel, engineer at RSS Roof. “The fall protection system prototype was heavy, expensive to build and cumbersome to use. With the practical experience of Jan Bekker and my technical know-how, we have continued to improve today’s fall protection system and optimized it to become what it is today. ” According to Koot Engel the design philosophy behind RSS’s fall protection system is characterized by five main criteria:

Safety
People who have to work on roofs must be well protected to prevent accidents. The system itself must be light to relieve pressure on people. It should not have sharp edges on which people could injure themselves. RSS falls under EN13374 safety class C, the highest class currently achievable.

Design philosophy
By adding as many functions as possible to as few components as possible during the design and development phase, a design has been created that looks simple.

Simplicity
The system should consist of as few components as possible so that people can install and disassemble it quickly, without any tools.

Technical feasibility
The system has been created from scratch using the latest technology in 3D laser cutting. That way we can create components that click together easily, but that are also visually appealing. Anyone can install and disassemble it without using unnecessary screws and components.

Affordability
Since the system consists of only a few components and is produced on the basis of the latest technologies, production costs can be kept low. In this way costs can be saved in the manufacture, storage and purchase of the system.
